Cambridge-based artist, producer and multi-instrumentalist Ryan Davies creates psychedelic rock under the Custard Dream pseudonym. Industrial percussion, fuzzy guitars and gritty synth sounds, all collide in his original spaced-out musical vision that blends retro 80’s bass lines, riff-driven rock vibes and reflective lyrical writing.
He now brings us his debut EP, Blue Wave, released via the 3Ms Music imprint, featuring five original compositions with an added bonus cover version of the Led Zeppelin classic “When The Levee Breaks”.
Written and recorded during lockdown, this forward thinking EP offers a fresh fusion of blues, new wave and electronic styles to create something entirely new. Hook-driven vocal lines sit above a rhythmic tapestry of electronic drum beats and synths, capped off with soaring euphoric guitar leads.
Commenting on the release, the artist offers, “I’m both obsessed with retro electronic music like Kraftwerk and also just straight up blues music and I wanted to force those two worlds together and make them get along like old friends.“
Adding, “Lyrically, I wanted to explore my love and hate of growing up in England. I love the poetic monotony of John Cooper Clarke and I wanted the lyrics to be somewhat English and mundane against a backdrop of space-age synthesisers.”
