London-based artist Callipolis is the alias of singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Timothée Botbol. The artist, originally from Switzerland, trained as a concert cellist at the Royal College of Music, leading to a successful early career in both the UK and Europe.
However it was when he shifted his focus to music production that his dystopian-pop sonic vision tinged by flirtations with conventional and mainstream music truly came to fruition. With his music, he reflects his own struggle as an introvert and delves into a fantasy world of lavish orchestral tones, vintage synths, dusty percussion and the occasional spectacular lead guitar work that nods to 80s styles.
Carrying the story of worlds that he dreams up with his songs is his mature baritone voice, delivering the subtle messages of fictional propaganda from the imaginary city of Callipolis.
A perfect demonstration of his conceptual musical work is his recent single “Twilight Snow”, which is one of the artist’s favourite productions to date. Snapping beats contrast a piquant blend of varied instrumentation that weave melodically beneath his powerful vocal work to create a constantly shifting dynamic sound that oozes originality.
Commenting on the track, he shares, “I think it’s vibe captures best the universe of Callipolis. The mixture of innocence and grandiose orchestral choruses, with a sprinkle of metalic textures. While my debut single was a rather abstract in its storytelling, this one catapults us literally in a dead-concrete episode of this dystopian dream.”
