From the coastal Australian city of Wollongong comes meadowhip, the slinky new solo project of singer and poet Cara Walkam who also forms one half of the indie pop duo Territories. Drawing influence from the likes of Solange, Tame Impala, Erykah Badu and Frank Ocean, the artist fuses introspective, impatient and irreverent lyrics with pop melodies.
Musically she fuses elements of psychedelic soul, alt-R&B and jazz to create a smooth backdrop of instrumentation and grooving beats that perfectly compliment her silky vocal work. Using the new project to explore themes of self and society, meadowhip offers a personal creative vision through Cara’s own unique lens. Commenting on the project, she shares, “I’m here to discuss the big three – capitalism, patriarchy, and myself.”
Following on from her debut single “Unexceptional”, she brings us her latest release with the new track “Getting Messy”. The new song chronicles the internal dialogue of a vaguely self aware millennial who is stuck in a vortex of social media algorithms and her own neurotic thoughts.
Spaced out and sleepy sounds combine with rhythm and hook-driven vocal lines to create a cosmic, lo-fi pop-R&B track with cheeky, contemplative lyrics. A mesmerising array of guitars, colourful synths and deep bass lines offer the setting for the artist’s perfectly crafted vocal delivery to fly, full of weaving melodies and backing vocal arrangements.
