Blackpool-based indie duo KIN TALA is formed by college friends Dom Rogers (vocals and guitar) and Shee Juma (guitar, keys and bass). An ode to their family and friends growing up, the name KIN TALA means “family music”, a tribute to those around them who shaped who they are today. Together they make rhythmic indie rock music with hook-driven writing in their sound that reflects themes of identity, society and challenges.
Originally going by the name Don’t Start Fires, the pair ended up going to study in separate parts of the country. Not letting the geographic distance stifle their combined creativity, they continued to send each other riffs and song ideas, and out of that constant friendship came the KIN TALA project.
With their debut single, “Swallow”, release in July 2021, followed up by the track “Kemosabe”, they return with their third release and the single “Coast”. With their latest offering they deliver a piquant indie jam, full of catchy vocal melodies, airy guitar lines and snappy rhythms. True to their reflective and conscious writing style, the song is a nod to the blissful ignorance we often experience from living in a chaotic world.
Commenting on the release, singer Dom shares, “I wrote Coast as an ode to ‘coasting’ through life, being blissfully unaware about the deep-rooted issues of our time, and to my coastal home town, Blackpool, a working-class town on the fringes of economic despair.”
Adding, “It’s both upbeat and at the same time quite stark in its message, we need to pay attention to these issues, and talk about them openly without getting tribal and political.”
