Makar is the husband and wife duo who have been releasing blue-infused indie rock since 2002. Describing themselves as a “…dark and groovy little New York band,” the project wasn’t planned. After their respective fruitless searches to join other outfits, they dared each other to write their own material. Before long they were joined by guitarist Vicente Viray, bassist Dan Coates and drummer Jorge Arias and embarked on their first nail biting gigs on the New York circuit, and dropping their debut album, 99 Cent Dreams, later that year.
Along their musical journey they’ve been voted into 2015’s Top Ten Indie Guitar Bands, alongside MGMT, Vampire Weekend and Ra Ra Riot as well as receiving late night rotation on MTV2.
Their latest release, the album Fancy Hercules, featured the best of their piano-driven rock sound that brings the unlikely pairing of punk and poetry into the same sound. The album was forged in the fires of quarantine and much like Hercules, who made it through his twelve labours smiting every beast, Makar transcended their own personal tragedies during the recording – both losing their mothers while trying to make sense of the changing world around them.
Lifted from the album comes the new single “Love and Confusion”, an upbeat and rhythmic bluesy jam centred around catchy vocal harmonies and light rock instrumentation, showcasing their wealth of songwriting and performance experience and a partnership that’s stood the test of time.
