Formed in early 2020, The Lowtones are a Norwich-based band comprising of vocalist Oli ‘Mav’ Mavilio, high school friend Tim Cary on Bass with brothers Jack and George Abbott on Guitar and Drums completing the lineup. Together, they craft their own take on post-punk to create an energetic and hook-driven sound.
Influenced by the likes of British 80’s pioneers such as The Smiths, The Cure, and Joy Division as well as more modern artists Interpol and Bloc Party they take their name from the dropped down D standard tuning they use, adding to their gritty and moody style.
With a string of live shows under their belt, notably playing a slow on the BBC Introducing stage at Wild Paths Festival, they bring us their new track “Breaking Out”, the first release recorded with producer Gavin Bowers at Catch 21 Records. A song about feeling trapped in a situation you are not happy in and taking the decision to take the leap and make the change, “Breaking Out” soundtracks the sensation of weight being lifted off your shoulders.
Rhythmic and straight to the point, the new single delivers an in-your-face intro to The Lowtones that any fan of indie and rock will relish.
Commenting on the track, the band offer, “Musically, we were (at least partly) inspired by the time. There is a lot of anxiety and uncertainty out there at the moment and we have sought to capture that in our sound. There isn’t any sort of specific context or set way it should be listened to.”
Continuing, “There are a lot of themes in the lyrics about isolation and loneliness, difficult break-ups and unrequited love which lots of people will be able to relate to on some level. But the music is also pretty up-beat and catchy so you can just as easily dance to it. Breaking Out is our first release of a number of tracks we have recorded with a more punchy, driving sound.”
