Formed in 2015 in the South Coast city of Portsmouth, Ross Murphy leads an outfit called Southerlies formed by musicians from other well known local bands. Joining singer and guitarist Ross Murphy and completing the line up is Rob Shaw on drums, Sam Cutbush on bass Jenny Ried with additional vocals, Steve Jay on Guitar, Faisal Sketty on harmonica and piano from Graeme Wallace.
Together they bring their experienced musicianship and touring backgrounds and collaborate to form a band with an Americana style. Drawing influence from the likes of Counting Crows, Jason Isbell, Ryan Adams, David Gray and Pearl Jam they’ve taken their music on the road and supported renowned acts such as Ocean Colour Scene, Beth Rowley, Roachford and Jack Savoretti.
Now they bring us a re-master of one of their tracks with the new release of “Words”. The original version was listed as BBC Introducing’s song of the week and the updated version offers a fuller and shiner sound complemented by new harmonies and guitar lines.
Recorded at Mayfield studios in Portsmouth, “Words” is based on experiences from darker times, with an aching pain in the lyrics seeping through the sound which also invokes a sense of determination to get out of that place in the chorus. Commenting on the track, they share, “This is a song about not giving up even when the dark times are upon you. Never stop dreaming because this is what keeps you alive!”
