Melbourne-based musician and producer Chris Lugton creates instrumental electronic music under the Sol Arctica alias. Fusing together styles and elements from a wide range of genres from retro synth music to hard rock, he creates bouncy synth music that’s entirely his own.
Originally coming from the hard rock and metal scene, he’s previously toured and been a key songwriter for many projects, which saw him be awarded ‘Best Rock Artist’ for one of his groups in the 2016 Australian Independent Music Awards. Performing all over Australia, he’s also worked internationally as a session guitarist in Germany.
Now he brings us the latest single from his solo project, this time linking up with several talented musicians such as the Brisbane jazz and soul vocalist Caterina Branca, Shaun Fogarty on saxophone and bass guitar work by the New York born musician Jerome Smith. Engineered at Toyland Recording Studios in Melbourne by Adam Calaitzis, the new single, titled “Dancing Here Always” is a love song that strikes a vintage vibe in its composition and sound.
Making use of recording techniques from the 80s, such as bouncing the drum track off a 2″24 track using analog tape as well as the classic electric piano preset recorded from an original vintage Yamaha DX7, they capture a warm nostalgic pop feel from that era. Catchy and rhythmic, on “Dancing Here Always”, Sol Arctica lays down a charming modern pop track wrapped up in a classic style that demonstrates the depths of his musical talent.
