Brooklyn-based folk pop duo almost sex was formed in 2020 at the height of the pandemic by Nick Louis and Warren LaSota after the pair connected online. Working and getting to know each other remotely for several months, they sent lyrics and demos back and forth, creatively coming together long before physically meeting one another.
After finally meeting in person and armed with material they’d digitally collaborated on, they recorded and released their debut offering with the single “Knockoff”, quickly followed up by two more tracks with “Charmer” and “Rest Up”. In 2021 they teamed up with Nick’s longtime friend and collaborator, the bass player and guitartist Ken Helmlinger, who co-wrote and produced the material that would form the band’s debut EP.
The EP, titled We’re Okay is their first collection of songs and features their quintessential bedroom alternative folk pop sound. A melodically-driven work carried by narrative-focused lyrical writing, on We’re Okay, almost sex delivers a stunning release full of vivid lofi textures, delicate beats and colourful vocal work.
Commenting on the EP, the band shares, “The process of writing and recording this EP involved us stripping things back a bit to consolidate the core elements that made up our sound. Our drummer had been away for work for most of the year, so we began performing shows with an analog drum machine from 1979.”
Adding, “We decided to take it into the studio with us and it ended up becoming the principal instrument featured on most of these tracks. Much of the lyrical content of the project centres around themes of getting older in an increasingly frightening and hyper-commodified world.”
