London-based composer and performer Dave Mohan creates music that fuses folk sounds with neo-classical elements. An artist that has always believed that music can and should be a force for good, with his songs he looks to heal and soothe the soul. As such, he often tackles challenging topics and never takes a self-conscious commercial outlook.
Predominantly Dave Mohan is a writer, recording artist and studio musician rather than an on the road and front of stage performer. Collaboration is at the core of his artistic pursuit and despite the uncertainty and recent difficulties posed by the pandemic, he continues to work with a range of incredible international musicians.
Some of the notable collaborators he’s worked with include musicians from the USA such as Lydia Salnikova, Juliet Lyons, Andres Mayo and Chad Martin, Carolina De La Muela from Argentina, Ilia Skibinsky and Maria Grigoryeva from Russia, Guido Scharmer-Choi from Germany and Ian Smith from the UK.
Now he brings us his latest work, with the instrumental piece titled “Caoineadh for Ukraine”, an evocative rhapsody for solo cello and piano. The song is written as a direct response for a tragedy where words fails and music takes on the mantle of prayer. A highly emotive sound is delivered by passionate and precise performances and captured by the mastering skills of Andy Walter at Abbey Road Studios, London.
The composition is paired with a music video that shares the beauty of a country now going through so much pain. The title of the piece also reflects the artist’s sentiments; ‘Caoineadh’ being from the old Gaelic word for crying or to lament.
