Pop band The Collection from North Carolina is a 2019 NPR Tiny Desk Judge’s Pick and they have already released 3 upbeat independent records. The group’s lively and raucous live show has drawn accolades nationwide and have been spotted touring with close friends The Oh Hellos and on various festival side stages – steadily making waves with each new record and making a mark. With touring at a halt due to restrictions, the band have been spending their downtime adjusting and tweaking their routines, ready to make a comeback. Trying to really figure out what being in a band, recording and making music together even is during these difficult times, the band have come together to release their brand new single “Won’t Stop Yet”. Upbeat, honest and sticky pop song is said to be based on trying to survive what often feels like the end of the world.
Lead singer David Wimbish said, “It’s my version of an empowering anthem – I want so badly to believe we’ll ‘get through this,’ but it doesn’t often feel true… so, for now, it’s one-foot-in-front-of-the-other choruses and hopeful melodies.”
Whilst travelling on tour at the Rock Boat cruise en route to Jamacia, David was seasick and this is when he discovered the song when it popped into his head. With the juxtaposition of joy and sickness – Wimbish laughed about how it laid the perfect foundation for the song. “I was nauseated and curled up in the fatal position, and drawing beats and whispering, ‘might not make it further, but I won’t stop yet.’ I finished the lyrics a month later, on New Years Eve, processing entering another year of Covid, shutdowns and generally feeling exhausted. All this is going on, and yet there’s something about a new year that is supposed to inspire and keep us going.”
Just before hitting the studio on his return to do his usual recording session, David passed on a quick demo of the lyrical music he had produced whilst away. In just a short time period, the song went viral! He comments “It was pretty overwhelming and great to be honest – we saw a 400% jump in streaming, new followers and fan activity in just a week’s time. I think everyone was just relating to that feeling of exhaustion, reflecting and looking what this next year is going to be. It was great to see it viewed, shared and discovered by so many new fans.”
