Californian indie pop outfit gloomy june take their name from the fog that engulfs their home city of San Francisco at the beginning of every Summer. While the fog brings cold and darkness, gloomy june brings bright charm with their original take on guitar-lead indie music.
Formed by lead singer Alexi Rose Belchere, guitarist Devin Nelson, Jack Sundquist on bass and drummer Ash Hyatt, the four-piece band offer honest confessional pop lyrics. Their music connects with listeners in an authentic way, often hitting home on themes of anxiety and uncertainty but with the optimistic outlook that uncertainty is ok.
They first burst onto the scene with their well-received debut single “Save Anyone” followed by the announcement of their Spring Tour and a slot at Fest 20. More recently, they’ve got their debut EP, titled Popsick about to drop and share with us a new single ahead of the EP.
The new single “Always Gonna Let You Down” showcases the very best of their infectiously catchy indie pop style. Full of ear-worm leads and bouncy pop rhythm, the track was born when guitarist Devin Nelson came to a rehearsal session with a synth arrangement of the track. Being reminded of the iconic 80s track “Never Gonna Give You Up” by Rick Astley, Nelson floated the title of the track “Always Gonna Let You Down”.
Paired with the single is a music video that was inspired by the song’s opening lyric “I killed the party yet again”. Shot, directed and edited by Izzie Clark, the visuals include scenes of the grim reaper dancing around the leftovers of a house party with the band members being the only guests left.
