Turkish artist Jem draws on his unique musical journey to offer a sound like no other. Having grown up in Turkey, he initially studied Opera at the age of sixteen before making the switch to study contemporary music in London.
With the traditional disciplines instilled from his operatic pursuits, he pairs his influences of artists such as Radiohead, Jeff Buckley, The Doors, Nick Drake and Sarah Vaughan with the Eastern tones and scales from his roots from places such as Turkey, Iran, Egypt, Lebanon and other Arab world countries.
In London he truly found his voice, where he continued to develop his fiercely original blend of desert-dry Middle-eastern percussions and melismatic singing mixed with his gritty rock guitar work. From his mysterious and emotive lyricism he spins deep stories in his writing full of vivid imagery and cryptic narrative.
With his expressive vocal work he weaves deliciously dark Persian style melodic leads that speak directly to your soul as well as opening the window into his own sonic world. After making his artistic introduction last year, he’s recently dropped his debut EP, showcasing the very best of his immersive writing and creative vision.
The four-track EP, titled Don’t Let Me Disappear, sees Jem set up the perfect collision between East and West on a collection of songs that are both stunningly haunting and beautifully dazzling. Commenting on the EP, he shares, “Recording my EP was one of the most spiritual experiences I’ve ever had. Since I was really young, music made me feel closer to a force beyond the human ego could ever reach. I am forever grateful for the serenity, joy, and sweet melancholy that music has brought into my life.”
Adding, “‘Don’t Let Me Disappear’ is the completion of songs I’ve written before and during the pandemic. It’s a combination of feelings and some musical notes which transformed me into the musician I am today! In a world where emotions are often mistaken as a weakness, I’ve never wished to stand back to talk about how I feel, and with time music became an outlet to express my emotions and grow free from my pain – from melancholy to euphoria.”
