Canadian artist and producer Markus Murphy creates funky retro soul music alongside his band of virtuoso jazz musicians including Josh Calder, Ethan Cohn, John Buck, Elie Hymowitz, Evan Shay, Scott Bevins, Tomo Wakiyama Newton, Maria Grigoryeva, Gabriel, Simon Walls and Paul Mahern. Together they combine to bring Markus’ compositions to life with stunning arrangements of accomplished performances.
Since his early teens, the Montreal-based artist has been writing songs, performing and recording music while perpetually searching for illusive sounds and intriguing sonic textures. Influenced by iconic artists from yesteryear such as Brian Wilson, Roy Orbison and Marvin Gaye as well as modern stars like Tame Impala, Thundercat and Durand Jones and the Indications, he uses his vast musical experience to weave those unique sounds into his original songs, creating wonderfully engrossing soundscapes.
Now he brings us one of his recent efforts with the new single “Already Blue”, a soulful gem full of catchy melodies, vivid instrumentation and an overall sound that’s dripping in sunshine. A rich tapestry of horns, strings, Latin percussion, rhodes keys and smooth vocal work were all recorded live in the traditional Motown style, giving the song a sense of timeless charm and warm aura.
Mixed and mastered by renowned industry legend Paul Mahern, “Already Blue” captures the sound from another time, transporting the listener to a beach decades ago. Though upbeat and sunny in outlook, the lyrics recount a pain within, delivered by Markus Murphy’s exceptional writing talents.
