ku:hu is a new London-based musician with a long and eventful journey to becoming an independent artist. Originally from Vadodara in India and spending her formative years in the Saudi Arabian city of Riyadh, by the age of 7 she had emigrated to London where her passion for music was ignited and inspired by the changing surroundings of her childhood.
Elements of classical Hindustani music collided and blended with modern pop and rock inspirations for the artist who took her first steps towards musicianship via classical piano lessons under the instruction of Australian pianist Elaine Fenn. Developing her talent and specialising in 20th western classical music, the artist went on to study at the prestigious Royal Holloway University of Music before progressing to the world-renowned Berklee College of Music in Boston, receiving a master’s degree in Contemporary Performance.
It was at Berklee that the idea of ku:hu really took form, with the artist discovering their calling for creating atmospheric and ethereal music that tells their own story. As a queer and non-binary artist, ku:hu’s story is especially crucial, a theme that dictates their writing as they grapple with heartbreak and finding their own identity in a challenging world.
Making an official introduction under the ku:hu moniker, the artist has linked with friend and fellow musician Wroi on the debut single “by your side”. Written about the story of finding the good in an otherwise toxic relationship, “by your side” showcases ku:hu’s sultry lo-fi R&B style, full of gentle beats and smooth soulful vocal work.
A truly collaborative project between the two artists, Wroi penned the emotive lyrics for the song while ku:hu handled the production. Stunningly melodic and delicately restrained, with “by your side”, ku:hu makes an introduction that’s been years in the making with a worthy debut single.
