Charivari releases new album

Hailing from Los Angeles, California, Julian Drucker is an artist who’s recent project seems him working under the Charivari alias and collaborating with the San Francisco-based choreographer Alyssa Mitchel. Together, they’ve created a contemporary dance production, combining both of their respective talents to craft a music and dance experience that explores mindfulness, meditation and connection.

Brought together by The Isolation Project, the composer-choreographer partnership were brought together in response to the Pandemic’s impact on the performing arts. With financial support from Dancer’s Group, the pair focused on a different meditation practice with each piece, with the work having its live premiere at the Exploratorium, San Francisco in November last year.

Grouping the music into a cohesive body of work, the Charivari project shares the album Here. Now. featuring twelve original compositions from Julian Drucker. Across the album, the artist blends elements of electronic and jazz to spin an ambient and experimental journey of mesmeric sounds. Delicate snapping beats pair with piquant instrumentation on Here. Now. creating an entirely original pairing to the dance project.

Commenting on the album, Julian Drucker shares, “When Alyssa approached me to write music for her dance production Here. Now., I knew I’d be exploring two unfamiliar worlds: Buddhist meditation and composing for dancers.”

Adding, “I spent a lot of time with wonderful ambient albums by The Dead Texan, Hiroshi Yoshimura, Harold Budd and the like, knowing this music would have to be meditative, but also let my natural tendencies toward jazz and funk creep in, with the understanding that the music would have to allow for the more active choreography to take shape. The result is an experimental hybrid that I hope will inspire listeners to meditate, dance, study, fall asleep, or just simply exist.”
