Bristol-based outfit King Heron was born out of the friendship of three musicians who each bring their own varied styles to the table with the common thread of grooves, improvisation and a love of musical exploration. Though the trio officially formed as King Heron just last year, they’ve been playing together under other names much longer as they established themselves as staples of the local jazz scene in Bristol.
The three-piece offer a guitar-based sound but push the boundary of what’s come before by drawing on their wide range of influences such as funk, jazz, R&B, soul and even touches of electronic music. Stirring the melting pot of their inspirations, paired with their readily apparent talents as writers and exceptional musicianship, they cook a distinct style that’s entirely their own.
Making their introduction under the King Heron flag earlier this year, they shared their debut single “Acrobat”, with the well-received release planting them firmly on the map. Complex rhythms and a wildly swung groove on the instrumental track set the tone for what’s to come from this rising trio as they bring us their debut EP titled Troika EP.
Featuring four original pieces, including “Acrobat” as the opening track, King Heron’s first EP lays down their expansive creative vision. Blending the very best of their individual talents they deliver a jumpy exploration of modern jazz tinged with New Orleans and Afro-Cuban tones.
At the core of the release, the band members’ relationship between each other provides the vehicle for its captivating energy. Drummer Cameron Macdougall’s infatuation with deep percussive grooves sets the driving intensity while Cerith Evans’ love for obscure metal subgenres and Jacob Houghton’s commanding study of jazz fuse seamlessly to create immersive and energising instrumental arrangements.
Linking with Nick Dover at Canyon Sound and Patrick Phillips, the group recorded and produced Troika EP before unveiling it at the vibrant Bristol venue The Gallimaufry. Commenting on their sonic endeavour, guitarist and composer Jacob shares, “The guitar trio is a staple of pop, jazz and rock. Like a comforting bowl of soup, you know where you stand when confronted with this sturdy mainstay of popular music.” With that sentiment in mind, King Heron brings their original alternative take on the style to offer something wholly new and exciting.
