London-based artist FLOTSZAM is an electronic artist living in a part-digital, part-physical world. Taking her name from the shipwreck of Maz after enduring a storm in life, she would become FLOTSZAM; broken, but still floating.
Starting out by working with songwriter and producer Sophie Ackroyd, she then linked with Florence + The Machine collaborator James Hallawell before finally settling on a more electronic direction with Ben Chetwood. Recently she’s been working on a series of musical releases aptly titled ‘Digital, Physical’.
Taking influence from pioneering trip-hop artists such as Portishead and Massive Attack, her recent single “Under the Same Sky” offers the very best of FLOTSZAM’s stunning creative vision. The song was first created the day after the Brexit vote in the summer of 2016, when the weather reflected much of the nation’s gloomy mood in the wake of the event.
As FLOTSZAM looked out of her window at the clouds in the stormy sky, she was listening to Joni Mitchell’s “Both Sides Now” on her phone in the bath. Following the victory of deceitful and divisive politics, the political climate had collided with a personal crises, surrounding the artist in darkness.
Part submerging herself into the water, she sought solace and hope in the music and the sky. As Joni Mitchell’s clouds reflected the clouds she saw, she had a spark of inspiration and wrote “Under the Same Sky”.
