Based in the French city of Lyon, Franco-Mexican artist Canek is a singer-songwriter who blends his passion for pop and classical styles of music when creating his own original sound. Since his teenage years, he’s been taking part in international tours with his high school choir as well as being involved in musicals and plays such as The Portrait of Dorian Gray.
Going on to study a degree in Arts in Musicology, Canek is also part of the baroque duo Anima Anticua. With his solo work however, he wanted to combine his classical roots with his love of pop music and fuse the two styles together, resulting in a unique sonic aesthetic that challenges the norms of classical as its blended with the unlimited creativity of modern pop ideas.
Last year saw the artist make his solo introduction with his debut single titled “You and Him”, which he followed up with a string of well-received tracks and two EPs throughout 2021. Now he’s back this year with his latest work and the new Canek single, “SEXXXsorship”.
Written by the French-based artist and engineered by Italian producer Giandomenico Italiano, the new electro-pop style single is the first track lifted from Canek’s upcoming debut album. Dealing with the shame and taboo that’s often still attached to the subject of sex, “SEXXXsorship (sex + censorship) talks about disapproval, judgment from others when talking about things that are unfortunately still considered taboo like sex,” the artist shares.
Adding, “people prefer you to be silenced, so I obey and don’t finish my sentences. I hum, IÂ
moan but I don’t say what is on my mind. I hope one day I’ll be free enough to just sayÂ
whatever comes to mind.”
Paired with the single comes a music video directed by the French director and photographer Baptiste Charruyer that sees Tof Moissonnier, Jérôme Meillasson and Canek himself star in the video. Shrouded in a red haze, reflecting the themes of passion and lust, the music video perfectly reflects the sentiments of Canek’s single that sees the artist remove the censorship from sex without being overly explicit.
Laying down a mesmerising audio and visual experience, with his latest single, Canek builds further excitement around a rising artist and hypes up the anticipation for his forthcoming album set to drop after this summer.
