Mexican musician and producer Bernardo Alvarado Rojas serves as the artistic director, producer and lead guitarist of the Montreal-based collaborative music project KALMO which brings together creatives from different backgrounds. With his own work, his new project called Asceta allows him to bring to fruition his own unique take on electronic dance music.
Currently he’s working on a multi-disciplinary performance piece titled ‘Flesh and Sound’, linking up with Paco Ziel and the Vias Dance Company, as well as creating the music for art installation ‘Terrarium’ by Terrasapies Studio.
He’s also just dropped his debut album as Asceta with the brand new record Peregrinaje al Cosmos. The eight-track release is an experimental, genre-bending journey of stunningly immersive electronic music that showcases the producer’s wildly creative composition and sound design talents.
Lifted from the release is the seventh track on the album and collaborative song with Paco Ziel, “Batalla Cósmica”. When invited by dancer and choreographer Paco Ziel to work on ‘Flesh and Sound’, Asceta was inspired to create the piece that saw him work alongside ethnomusicologists and anthropologists, drawing on resources such as books, Mesoamerican codex, and sound recordings of reference regarding pre-hispanic culture to craft a captivating exploration of mesmeric electronic soundscape.
Featuring Bernardo’s composition, performance and production, with Seashell trumpet instrumentation by Paco Ziel, the pair spin a deeply atmospheric downtempo sound that’s as enthralling as it is original.
