Hailing from the Icelandic city of Reykjavík, virgin orchestra is a post-punk trio formed by Stefanía Pálsdóttir, Starri Holm and Rún Árnadóttir. All students at the Icelandic University of the Arts, they first met in the music department and came together to work on their highly original sonic vision.
Crafting a truly unique sound of dreamy pop wrapped up in shoegaze tones, they blend live instrumentation such as guitar, bass, cello and vocals with programming and experimental textures. Taking influence from artists from The Cure, My Bloody Valentine and The Velvet Undergound to Dmitri Shostakovich and Delia Derbyshire, their diverse backgrounds and experiences combine to create something entirely new.
Unveiling their sound in May of this year, they shared their debut effort with the double-sided single titled on your knees/give in. Released to critical acclaim both in Iceland and around the world, they’ve made an impact straight away and earned extensive radio support of their music.
Featuring the two songs “on your knees” and “give in”, the release delivers their captivating atmospheric rock sound full of crunchy, distant guitar tones and lofty vocal work to offer two stunning soundscapes. Following the release of their debut they spent a month in Berlin where they performed their first live show as well as recorded their first full-length record set to drop by the end of the year.
