Hailing from Cardiff in South Wales, Ritual Cloak is an electronic post rock duo formed by songwriters and musicians Daniel Barnett and Andrew Sanders. Over the last three years they’ve been sharing their highly original and atmospheric sonic vision that sees them channel the aesthetics of artists such as Mogwai, Radiohead, Sigur Ros and Kiasmos.
Making their introduction in 2019, they shared their debut single with the track Everyone is Hungover so I Walked the Mountain Alone. Since then they’ve released an impressive string of releases that showcase their stunning songwriting and talent for creating deeply immersive soundscapes.
Now following their sophomore record Divine Invasions, collaborations with Welsh poet Autumn Juvenile and Polish artist Michal Iwanowski as well as covering a song by R.E.M., they bring us their latest work with the new single titled “Shell”. Released via the Bubblewrap Collective imprint, their new single is written about a dream where you’re left wandering in search of someone but never quite able to find them.
A song that’s been in their repertoire for a few years, “Shell” has gone through various iterations and versions before taking shape in its final form we hear now. Originally composed for a stripped back acoustic guitar arrangement, its since evolved to take on a dreamy and ethereal tone full of delicate sonic textures and carried by alluring stretched out melodic leads.
Pushing the boundary of their sound, on “Shell” Ritual Cloak experimented with a vocoder and deliberate autotune processing pioneered by acts like Bon Iver and Mogwai to offer a new side to their previous offering via a mesmeric and engrossing new song.
