Inspired by the glossy pop sounds of artists such as Glass Animals and Jungle, with influence from pioneering alternative R&B acts likes FKA twigs, BANKS and James Blake, Maya Yenn is a UK-based artist who’s been making waves with her own brand of brooding pop music. Growing up in the idyllic English countryside, she developed her artistic palette by supporting artists like Dan Croll and Stealing Sheep when she was a teenager, before moving to London to pursue her sonic ambitions.
When the pandemic struck, she moved back to her parents’ Staffordshire home where she’s since been working on her highly original creative vision. The all-round musical talent is an artist who takes full control of her output by directing every aspect of her project including writing, performing and producing her own music, to curating her cover art and directing her own music videos.
While she’s earned recognition on TikTok for her innovative creation of beats made with everyday found sound samples, it’s with her solo artist work that she’s making the most exciting impact. April 2021 saw her drop her debut single “tiptoe” via Gossamer Ghoul Records which introduced the world to her unique sound of dark pop framed by atmospheric sound design.
Releasing her sophomore single “How Much Sadness Can You Swallow?” a few months later, she now brings us her new music video for her third single titled “Better Luck Next Time”. In her typical style, on her latest single she delivers an enthralling and original pop sound of playful rhythm and instantly memorable melodic writing delivered via a hushed yet compelling vocal style.
Showcasing the expanse of her visually creative talent, with the music video she shares the highly anticipated self-directed pairing for the single. Coming off the back of her music video for “How Much Sadness Can You Swallow?” which won ‘Best Music Video’ at British Independent Film Festival and Liverpool Film Festival last year, with her latest artistic work she spins a cinematic and colourful visual offering that perfectly reflects the context of her captivating third single.
