Hey Varsha, how’s things?
Hey, Ive been preparing for releasing Damaged Planet. I haven’t had much sleep.
What was your biggest highlight in 2022 as an artist?
I think my highlight was I got into writing headspace. I wrote everyday and realised that I could write the kind of songs that I always thought was missing from my playlist.
How did you first get into making your own music?
I used to write self motivating poetries for myself, to feel better during boarding school ; being bullied and away from family.
It worked as a coping mechanism and I always loved singing ever since I was a kid. So combining the two gave me a sense of purpose and I began writing songs.
I officially started performing and writing songs after I formed my band Sita Virgin in 2018 In New York.
Which artist first made a lasting impression on you?
Late Mangeshkar, Pink Floyd, Radio Head, Frank Ocean.
How has moving across the world to a completely different place influenced your music?
When I lived between Nepal and India I was very influenced by the eastern music, vocations, scales, instruments and my library of references only got bigger as I moved to the west.
So many incredible artists from around the world have made their way into my music in one way or another. It’s very inspiring also from a journey standpoint.
What do you love about the New York music scene?
I love that New York is one of the most diverse cities in the world and so there are so many musicians who bring their essence and their culture and mix it with the modernity and nuances of the current world. It’s one of the most beautiful thing to watch especially during live shows.
Which artists do you draw most inspiration from today?
Lata mangeshkar, radio head, pink floyd, mazzy star, bjork, frank ocean.
How else do you find inspiration for your music?
I go on a lot of walks in nature. Nature has a way of speaking to me and presenting answers Ive been looking for. I also read books and biographies.
What would you say is the perfect setting for listeners to enjoy your sound?
In solitude, in their rooms when their thoughts can breathe.
How has your sound evolved since you started out?
I have definitely gotten nuanced in terms of the sounds I’d like to hear, understood how I can better use the skills I have and what I need to work on. All these aspects have allowed me to work my creative process and ultimately the song in a deeper way therefore producing an evolved result.
How did you find making your brand new single “Damaged Planet”?
It was a wonderful process, I worked on this song with my producer Kayhan Azadi, who is so talented and accommodating. We tried various ways of approaching the song, with and without lots of instruments. We finally landed on making it the way it is now because it just felt right and more beautiful. The vocals and instruments have lived well throughout the song.
What message did you want to get across with this release?
Damaged PLanet is about self reflection first reflecting on the outside world then its impact on the inside world and making a decision to go back to self. Self is seen as home that needs love, care and nourishment,as it seems to have been lost while pouring a lot of it on the outside world.
What artist have you been listening to most recently?
Radiohead, Frank Ocean, Weyes Blood.
What’s the main thing you want people to get out of listening to your music?
A look into how their inner world and observing how the outside world impacts their inner world.
What’s been your favourite live show so far?
My first ever live show, in Mercury lounge in April 2018. It was the first time I saw my music come to life.
Who would be 3 artists to headline your dream festival? And where would it be?
I’d love to perform intimate shows in closed spaces, with Frank ocean (if he ever decides to perform) Weyes Blood and Rhye.
Do you have any advice for a new artist wanting to follow your footsteps?
Stay true to your artistic direction.
Finally, what do you have lined up for the rest of 2023?
2023 I’m planning on releasing my music.
